Dependent on what your underfloor heating requirements are there are several different ways for the electrical installation.

Underfloor Heating - Electrical information and resources.

Electrical connection base on one room heating mat coverage of less than 20m2

This type of installation can be installed using a fused spur from an existing ring main (plug socket). you will need the following items.

  • 1 13amp fused spur
  • 3 35mm back boxes
  • 1 blanking plate
  • A length of 1.5mm twin and earth wire
  • Connection clips or connector blocks

The junction box (35mm back box and blanking plate) is situated just above skirting board level. All the cold leads from the heating mats will be terminated at this point and a single length of twin and earth will be routed from the cold leads up to the thermostat back box.

The thermostat if air only or air and floor should be situated 1.5m from floor level, this is to enable the built in temperature sensor to take a head height temperature (floor only thermostats can be situated anywhere on the wall)

The fused spur is usually situated next to a plug socket but can be situated anywhere.

The floor temperature sensor is usually led from the thermostat, down a conduit and to the floor area (between the ribbons).

Before connecting the heating mats it is important to check the resistances of the mats are within the values in the installation manual.

Electrical connection for more than 1 room or rooms over 20m2

Where you are installing underfloor heating in more than 1 room or the overall size is greater than 20m2 we would recommend a feed direct from your consumer board (electrical distribution board) using a radial circuit.

Electrical connections for rooms greater than 24m2 and less than 40m2 using a thermostat expansion kit.

The thermostat expansion kit will allow you to fit underfloor heating in large rooms with ease. An additional back box will be required to insert the expansion kit into. for further details about the expansion kit please contact our technical team on 01352 757557 or download the basic diagram.

Bathrooms, Kitchens and wet areas

It is important to use grounding kits in areas where the heating elements can come into contact with waters, 1 Kit will cover an area of approximately 6m2. to find out more about our grounding kit click here,
